The Helperby Brafferton Recreational Trust is a registered charity established in March 2022, dedicated to creating a vibrant and inclusive recreational space for the villages of Helperby and Brafferton.
To support this vision, we organise the annual Helperby Beer Festival, a beloved local event that has raised over £50,000 in the past ten years. These funds are earmarked for developing a community recreational area that is accessible to all—regardless of age or physical ability.
Our plans include a sensory area, adventure trail, multi-game ball pen, and open recreational space—creating a sustainable, long-term asset that will serve as a hub for wellbeing, play, and community connection for generations to come.
Following a positive village-wide survey in 2018, it became clear that a simple set of swings and a slide would not meet the needs of our growing community. Thanks to the generosity of Sir Anthony and Lady Harriet Milnes-Coates, we secured a 1.6-acre plot of land in the heart of the village—a significant milestone in bringing this vision closer to reality.
We have carefully explored several design options to ensure the space meets the diverse needs of our community. Accessibility, inclusivity, and sustainability have been central to every decision. The current concept balances active play, sensory experiences, and social spaces—shaped by both local feedback and professional advice.
While the Trust will lead the project and make key decisions, we will consult villagers to gather input on equipment, layout, and design, ensuring the final space reflects the community’s needs and aspirations.
We are now actively applying for grant funding to bring this project to life. If you can offer expertise, support, or simply want to get involved, please contact us at drink@helperbybeerfestival.co.uk
